Credit Counseling Questions

credit counselingAs one of the most underutilized resources for debtors, credit counseling agencies provide numerous services that are valuable for anyone looking to take control over their finances. Even if you aren?t suffering from overwhelming debt troubles or required to take the course as part of a bankruptcy filing, credit counselors can offer you information and tools that are sure to improve your financial future. If you are considering seeking help from a credit counselor, be sure to ask these important questions.

1. Are you a non-profit agency? A reputable credit counseling agency is one that operates as a not for profit organization. While there are numerous companies operating offering similar services, it is best to be sure you have an licensed and approved agency. Approved agencies will adhere to the guidelines under Section 501(c)(3) of the IRS code and are listed on the U.S. Department of Trustees website.

2. What services do you offer? It is important to work with an agency that offers a wide array of services. Any company that attempts to ?sell? you on one particular service, should be viewed as suspicious. You want to find a company that offers money management courses, tools for learning about budgeting/saving, information on making smart investments, options for dealing with mortgage debts and provides ways to help you develop a debt management plan.

3. Are your counselors trained and certified? Working with an approved agency doesn?t always guarantee that their staff are adequately trained. You want to be sure that your credit counselor is fully licensed and trained in the area of financial management. Adequately trained staff will hold degrees or licenses independent of the company, such as a Certified Public Accountant or Financial Manager.

Mercury: Unusual insides and active history

New information collected by NASA's Messenger shows that Mercury was more geologically active than scientists previously thought.

The small, sun-scorched planet Mercury has an interior unlike that of any other rocky planet in our solar system and a surprisingly dynamic history, two new studies suggest.

Using observations from?NASA's Messenger spacecraft?in orbit around Mercury, researchers have found that the planet's huge iron core is even larger than they had thought, and it's likely overlain with a solid shell of iron and sulfur ? a layered structure not known to exist on Earth, Venus or Mars. And there's more: Mercury appears to have remained geologically active for a surprisingly large chunk of its evolutionary history, researchers said.

"Many scientists expected Mercury, being a small planet only slightly larger than the moon, to have cooled off not long after it formed and to be?essentially 'dead' for most of its evolution," said Maria Zuber of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, lead author of one of the new studies and a co-author on the other. "But it appears that Mercury had an exciting and active?middle age."

Mercury from above

The $446 million Messenger (MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry and Ranging) spacecraft launched in 2004. It then took a circuitous route to the solar system's innermost planet, becoming the first probe ever to orbit Mercury in March 2011. [Latest Mercury Photos from Messenger]

Since then, Messenger has been zipping around the baking-hot planet ? which orbits the sun from just 36 million miles (58 million kilometers) away, compared to 93 million miles (150 million km) for Earth ? once every 12 hours.

The probe is mapping Mercury's surface?and gathering data on the planet's composition, magnetic environment and tenuous atmosphere, among other features. To date, Messenger has taken nearly 100,000 images and made more than 4 million measurements of the planet's surface, researchers said.

Messenger's original science campaign was designed to last one Earth year, but NASA announced in November that it had granted the spacecraft a one-year mission extension. Messenger officially began its extended mission?earlier this week.

Surprising findings

The two new studies, which both appear in the March 23 issue of the journal Science, detail findings that should help scientists better understand Mercury's murky past.

In one study, researchers used observations made by Messenger's laser altimeter to map the topography of Mercury's northern hemisphere. They found that the range of elevations was smaller than that found on either Mars or the moon.

TV hacking claims pile pressure on James Murdoch

LONDON (Reuters) - A lawmaker is to demand that the UK television watchdog probe new hacking claims against News Corp, piling more pressure on BSkyB Chairman James Murdoch, whose fitness to own a broadcast licence is already under scrutiny.

A BBC Panorama documentary broadcast on Monday alleged NDS, a pay-TV smartcard maker recently sold by News Corp for $5 billion (3 billion pounds), hired a consultant to post the encryption codes of ITV Digital, a key rival of the then Sky TV, on his website.

Widespread piracy after the online publication of the codes contributed to the 2002 collapse of ITV Digital, which had been set up by the parties that later formed ITV, Britain's leading free-to-air commercial broadcaster, in 1998.

BSkyB, now Britain's dominant pay-TV broadcaster, is 39 percent owned by News Corp. Murdoch sits on NDS's board.

NDS said in a statement: "It is wrong to claim that NDS has ever been in the possession of any codes for the purpose of promoting hacking or piracy."

News Corp said: "NDS has consistently denied any wrongdoing to Panorama and we fully accept their assurances."

Regulator Ofcom is already investigating both Murdoch and News Corp in the light of new evidence emerging from probes into phone and computer hacking and bribery at the News of the World tabloid, which News Corp shut down last July.

"These allegations, if true, are the most serious yet and I am referring the matter to Ofcom, who have a duty to investigate as part of their fit and proper test," member of parliament Tom Watson said of the claims made in the BBC's Panorama programme.

"If what Panorama says is true, it suggests a global conspiracy to undermine a great British company, ITV Digital," he told Reuters on Tuesday.

An Ofcom spokesman declined to comment on the specific allegations but said the regulator would consider "all relevant evidence" as part of its ongoing duty to be satisfied that the owner of the licence was fit and proper.

Watson is known for his dogged questioning of James Murdoch and his father Rupert for their role in the phone-hacking affair, notoriously comparing James to a Mafia boss when he appeared at a parliamentary hearing investigating the hacking.

The committee has been due since early this year to present a report based on its investigations, which is expected to be critical of James Murdoch and may determine whether he has a future in Britain.

Watson said the report was now unlikely to be published before the Easter holiday on April 8. He said the new revelations were unlikely to affect the committee's work, since they were not part of its remit.

James Murdoch was not involved in News Corp's UK newspaper operations when the phone-hacking took place at the News of the World but is under scrutiny for failing to uncover the scale of the problem when he took charge there shortly afterwards.

Murdoch is now based in New York following his promotion to deputy chief operating officer of News Corp last year, and is focusing on the conglomerate's pay-TV businesses. He severed all ties with the UK newspapers earlier this month.

"There's no suggestion anywhere that Sky or News Corp knew what NDS was doing," broadcaster and media consultant Steve Hewlett told Reuters.

"But if it all turns out to be true, then you have a News Corp company once again behaving in ways that are less than proper," he said.

APPETITE FOR RISK

The Panorama documentary featured an interview with Lee Gibling, the owner of a satellite hacking website, who said NDS funded the expansion of his site and had him distribute ITV Digital's codes.

NDS said it never used or intended to use the site for any illegal purpose, and said it had paid Gibling for his expertise so that information from the site could be used to track and catch hackers and pirates.

NDS also said it was common for companies in the pay-TV industry to discover one another's encryption codes - a view endorsed by Adam Laurie, a security researcher with UK-based Aperture Labs, which specialises in access control.

"It's possible they cracked them themselves in order to test the security of the algorithms," he told Reuters. "To compare yours against others you have to test them and there's a chance you'll succeed."

ITV Digital was beset by issues from the start, including internal competition between its shareholders, a lack of premium content, and a price war with BSkyB, which had been shut out of the venture by the regulator.

"It was a question of who's got the deepest pockets and the biggest appetite for risk, and it wasn't ITV," said Hewlett, who was working for an ITV company at the time.

"It's a complex picture, but to say that ITV Digital failed because of piracy, I think, is not correct."

NDS, whose technology is used by BSkyB and News Corp pay-TV operators including Sky Italia and Sky Deutschland, was sold by News Corp and private equity firm Permira to Cisco this month.

The deal is expected to close in the second half of 2012.

Cisco had no immediate comment on whether the new allegations posed any risk to the deal. NDS said Cisco had been fully briefed on past allegations and court cases.

NDS was sued in a $3 billion lawsuit in 2002 by Canal Plus, which had supplied the scrambling technology for ITV Digital and accused NDS of extracting the code from the cards and leaking it onto the Internet.

Canal Plus dropped the action in 2003 when News Corp bought Italian satellite pay TV company Telepiu from Canal Plus's then debt-stricken owner Vivendi, renaming it Sky Italia.

U.S. satellite TV provider EchoStar, which had tried to join the Canal Plus suit, then sued NDS in 2003 in a similar case. NDS was cleared of the main charges and EchoStar won a tiny fraction of the $2 billion in damages it had sought.

Earlier this month, NDS was awarded $19 million in damages after the U.S. Supreme Court denied a petition by EchoStar and Swiss digital security company Kudelski over their allegations that NDS had abetted piracy in the United States.

In Italy, a long-running pay-TV piracy trial is still ongoing. One of the defendants, Davide Rossi, says he was collecting intelligence on behalf of an NDS security officer.

NDS said on Tuesday: "NDS wholly refutes the allegation that Mr Rossi acted illegally on behalf of NDS. NDS is not a defendant in the trial in Sicily or any other."

Senators ask feds to probe requests for passwords

Troubled by reports of the practice of employers asking for Facebook passwords during job interviews, Democratic Sens. Chuck Schumer of New York, left, and Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut said they are calling on the Department of Justice and the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to launch investigations. SEATTLE (AP) ? Two U.S. senators are asking Attorney General Eric Holder to investigate whether employers asking for Facebook passwords during job interviews are violating federal law, their offices announced Sunday.

Troubled by reports of the practice, Democratic Sens. Chuck Schumer of New York and Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut said they are calling on the Department of Justice and the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to launch investigations. The senators are sending letters to the heads of the agencies.

The Associated Press reported last week that some private and public agencies around the country are asking job seekers for their social media credentials. The practice has alarmed privacy advocates, but the legality of it remains murky.

On Friday, Facebook warned employers not to ask job applicants for their passwords to the site so they can poke around on their profiles. The company threatened legal action against applications that violate its long-standing policy against sharing passwords.

A Facebook executive cautioned that if an employer discovers that a job applicant is a member of a protected group, the employer may be vulnerable to claims of discrimination if it doesn't hire that person.

Personal information such as gender, race, religion and age are often displayed on a Facebook profile ? all details that are protected by federal employment law.

"We don't think employers should be asking prospective employees to provide their passwords because we don't think it's the right thing to do. While we do not have any immediate plans to take legal action against any specific employers, we look forward to engaging with policy makers and other stakeholders, to help better safeguard the privacy of our users," Facebook said in a statement.

Not sharing passwords is a basic tenet of online conduct. Aside from the privacy concerns, Facebook considers the practice a security risk.

"In an age where more and more of our personal information ? and our private social interactions ? are online, it is vital that all individuals be allowed to determine for themselves what personal information they want to make public and protect personal information from their would-be employers. This is especially important during the job-seeking process, when all the power is on one side of the fence," Schumer said in a statement.

Specifically, the senators want to know if this practice violates the Stored Communications Act or the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. Those two acts, respectively, prohibit intentional access to electronic information without authorization and intentional access to a computer without authorization to obtain information.

The senators also want to know whether two court cases relating to supervisors asking current employees for social media credentials could be applied to job applicants.

"I think it's going to take some years for courts to decide whether Americans in the digital age have the same privacy rights" as previous generations, American Civil Liberties Union attorney Catherine Crump said in a previous interview with the AP.

The senators also said they are drafting a bill to fill in any gaps that current laws don't cover.

Maryland and Illinois are considering bills that would bar public agencies for asking for this information.

In California, Democratic Sen. Leland Yee introduced a bill that would prohibit employers from asking current employees or job applicants for their social media user names or passwords. That state measure also would bar employers from requiring access to employees' and applicants' social media content, to prevent employers from requiring logins or printouts of that content for their review.

CSU coach Tim Miles expected to get Nebraska job

The Denver Post's sports reporters contribute analysis, notes and minutiae on this blog dedicated to CSU athletics.

Colorado State men's basketball coach Tim Miles met with officials from Nebraska in Lincoln today to discuss their coaching vacancy and according to multiple media outlets, is expected to be the Cornhuskers' next coach, with an official news conference as soon as Saturday.

ESPN.com reported that Miles is flying back to Fort Collins today and still needs to meet with Colorado State officials tonight, as well as speak to his team, before finalizing the deal. ESPN.com reported that Miles has been offered a five-year contract with a rollover for a sixth, starting at $1.4 million a year. The contract would be an estimated $8.7 million over six years.

Miles led the Rams to the NCAA tournament and a fourth-place finish in the Mountain West (8-6) and a 20-12 overall record this past year. The Rams lost to Murray State in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

According to the Lincoln Star-Journal, Miles was on the Nebraska campus this morning, touring the school's basketball facilities with athletic director Tom Osborne.

Before taking the Rams to the NCAA Tournament, Miles told The Denver Post: "Here's what I know about coaching: This is the fourth school I've been at, so I know this journeyman-type stuff. You're either coming or going in this business. If you're not doing well, you should be fired. And if you are doing well, they all think you're taking another job. That goes with the territory. We love CSU. I'm happy to build a winner here. We're going to enjoy this journey and try to have a team that can winin the NCAA Tournament. I'm excited about what we're doing now, and I'mexcited about our future."

In five seasons at CSU, Miles is 71-88. In Miles' first season CSU was 7-25 and got better every year since then. Nebraska is replacing Doc Sadler, who was fired March 9, after the Huskers finished 12-18.

When Osborne returned to the campus from taking Miles to the airport on Friday afternoon for a return flight to Fort Collins, he stopped briefly to talk with reporters.

"There's nothing definitive," Osborne told The World-Herald. "Obviously, we're interviewing some people."

Former CSU athletic director Paul Kowalczyk signed Miles to a three-year contract extension last May, complete with an incremental $330,000 pay raise. It extended his original contract through 2016 and has a $250,000 longevity incentive if he stays until then. Miles' pay raise was a two-step process. He had a base salary of $420,000. Last July it was bumped up to $585,000. This July 1, it would increase to $750,000 if he stayed.

Epson LabelWorks LW-300 Label Printer

The Epson LabelWorks LW-300 Label Printer ($39.99 direct) is the lower priced of two similar standalone label printers that Epson recently introduced, offering most of the features of the Epson LabelWorks LW-400 ($49.99 direct, 3.5 stars) for $10 less. This battery-powered machine performs basic label printing, offering various fonts, type styles, and a wide variety of symbols. It?s highly portable and operates totally PC free.

The Basics

The LW-300 has a white base, matte-black top, and rounded corners. On top is a QWERTY keyboard, about 5 inches wide; a 4-way controller; a 1-line LED display; ?and about a dozen function buttons related to creating labels. To the left of the display is an On/Off button; to the screen?s right is the Print button, its importance underscored by the fact that it?s one of only 2 green buttons. The other, on the printer?s right side, lets you snip the completed label.

The printer measures 2.2 by 5.9 by 5.7 inches (HWD) and weighs 1.2 pounds. Although it?s wider than a normal hand?s width, an indentation on the bottom doubles as a finger grip; I had no trouble holding the printer in one hand and typing with the other.

As is the case with the Epson LW-400, the LW300 is a totally standalone label printer; there?s no way to hook it to a PC if you wanted to. The upside of that is you can print labels anywhere you can carry this ultraportable device. The downside is you?re consigned to using the small QWERTY keyboard to create your labels.

Even using two hands with the printer resting on a table, typing for me on the LW-300?s keyboard was strictly hunt and peck. The keyboard is nearly an inch wider than the one on the LW-400, but I still wasn?t able to accurately touch type with it. The Editors? Choice Brother P-touch PT-2730 ?($100 street, 4 stars) operates either standalone or connected to a computer, as does the Dymo LabelManager 420P ?($110 street, 4 stars), though the Dymo?s own keyboard is alphabetically arranged rather than QWERTY.

The printer is powered by six AAA batteries. Should you forget to turn the LW-300 off, it will shut itself off after five minutes. The bottom can be easily opened to replace batteries or the tape cartridge. An optional AC adapter is available for $25 (direct).

Epson offers 25 different label cartridges, up to a half-inch wide, for the LW-300, including standard, strong adhesive, clear, glow-in-the-dark, iron-on (fabric), metallic, and pearlized, in several different type and background colors. The Epson LW-400, for which Epson offers 41 cartridges up to ? inch wide, supports the printing of specialty labels such as barcodes, double-sided tabs, wire wraps, and flags. Both the Brother P-touch PT-2730 and the Dymo LabelManager 420P support printing of three-fourths-of-an-inch labels.

Inserting a label cartridge is literally a snap. Once you remove the printer?s bottom cover, you just snap the cartridge into place, making sure that any excess tape is fed through the two guides.

Label Making

Creating labels is straightforward enough, though it takes time to get used to the function keys and I found myself constantly referring to the instructions. One function key toggles between upper and lower case; one sets type size (you can have either one or two lines of text on the label); one lets you choose the font and another, the type style (bold, italic, outline, etc.). One function key lets you add punctuation; another, symbols; and yet another, accents.

A Setup button performs various functions, among them specifying label length; adjusting space between characters; chaning the font width, creating vertical text, and creating mirror-image text. A preview button scrolls through the text you?ve entered and lets you know label length.

There is a learning curve in mastering label making with the LW-300, and you don?t want to lose the instructions, but in time it gets easier and quicker.

The LW-300 took 11.6 seconds to print a 2.8-inch label reading This is a test and 19 seconds for a 4.9-inch label reading PCMag: Printer Speed Test, essentially the same speed as the LW-400. The Brother P-touch PT-2730 took 11.6 seconds to print a 3.5-inch-long label, also reading PCMag: Printer Speed Test, while the Dymo LabelManager 420p ($110 street, 4 stars), printed the same text in just 6.5 seconds.?

If you don?t plan on printing barcodes, wide labels, or labels for cabling, the Epson LabelWorks LW-300 Label Printer offers most of what the LW-400 does, for less. Although there?s some learning curve, it?s easy enough to use, highly portable, and its wider keyboard is slightly easier to type on than the LW-400?s. The Brother P-touch PT-2730 and the Dymo LabelManager 420p let you create labels either as a standalone device or from a computer keyboard, but both cost more than twice as much as the LW-300.?

Canada: Support strong for capital punishment, but PM won't (Petra.)

Support strong for capital punishment, but PM won't open debate
8:33 pm, March 16th, 2012

OTTAWA -- Prime Minister Stephen Harper says opening the debate on capital punishment is a non-starter, despite this week's outcry from Canadians horrified by details of the Tori Stafford case.

"I don't think there is a public consensus on the death penalty," Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Friday. "I don't think the public wants to reopen the debate and I don't intend to reopen the debate."

Terri-Lynne McClintic pleaded guilty to the murder of eight-year-old Tori, and is testifying against her former boyfriend, who is currently on trial for first-degree murder.

Canadians started an online campaign to have a referendum on the death penalty in response to McClintic's conviction. In a recent Abacus Data survey, 66% of Canadians indicated they want the death penalty to be used in cases like Tori's, just as they called for it when they learned about the details of the deaths of Tammy Homolka, Leslie Mahaffy and Kristen French -- all victims of serial killers Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka. Some also think capital punishment is justified in the recent Shafia family murder case.

"I know there is a certain sentiment about capital punishment, and it comes out in these times, but those may not be the times when we need to make conscious decisions about where to go, because then it is a case of anger and emotion," said Conservative MP David MacKenzie.

MacKenzie is a former police chief of the Ontario city of Woodstock, where Tori lived. He says while he is aghast at what happened, he struggles with capital punishment.

During the 1990s, the death penalty was discussed on the Hill. In response to the Bernardo and Homolka case, several Reform Party members called for it to be reintroduced to the Canadian justice system.

Calgary's Rob Anders, however, is one of the only MPs left calling for the death penalty. He was first elected as a Reform MP in 1997.

"I support capital punishment, certainly in cases like this, and serial murders like Olson, or Bernardo," Anders said. "These people can't be rehabilitated. I also have no doubt that capital punishment serves as a severe deterrent."

Satellite images reveal 8,000 years of civilization, rooftop pranks

Image
When on the hunt for ancient civilizations, it's not all about Pyramids and monuments. Archaeologists have developed a method of spotting smaller human settlements using spy-satellite photos from the 60s, digital maps and modern multi-spectral images of the planet's surface. The Scientists are looking for "anthrosols" which are left by decayed organic matter and mud-brick buildings. Containing a higher levels of organic matter, anthrosols impart a different texture and appearance to untouched soil, giving it a distinct visual signature. Software is used to spot these visual fingerprints from images over a 50 year period. Data from NASA's Shuttle Radar Topography Mission is also used to determine the volume of the matter, and therefore the likely length of survival of the settlement. To give an idea of how prolific the system is, it's believed to have discovered 14,000 settlement sites in a 23,000 square kilometer area of Syria alone -- none of them Atlantis.

Romney wins Illinois GOP primary

?

Updated at 6:44 a.m. ET ? Mitt Romney won the Illinois Republican primary with ease on Tuesday night, allowing him to grow his delegate advantage over his rivals in the fight for the party's?presidential nomination.

The primary?had offered Republicans maybe their best chance yet of a genuine one-on-one battle between the former Massachusetts governor and Rick Santorum, his chief competitor for the nod.

"Elections are about choices. And today, hundreds of thousands of people in Illinois have joined millions of people across the country to join our cause," Romney told a throng of supporters in the Chicago suburb of Schaumburg.

As a result of the Illinois vote, Romney's delegate tally rose, though?the state-wide popular vote had no technical bearing on the eventual allocation of delegates.

In Illinois, voters elect delegates separately on candidates' behalf.

A total of 54 delegates were at stake on Tuesday, and NBC News projected as of 6:30 a.m. ET that 41 went to Romney and 10 to Santorum.

Check out NBC's Decision 2012 delegate tally here

Still, the primary, held in President Barack Obama's adopted home state (typically a Democratic stronghold in the general election), gave Romney a chance to further his campaign's case that he is the inevitable Republican nominee. He achieved his victory with a similar coalition of voters that had tended to support him in previous caucuses and primaries.

Romney show signs of strength as Republicans begin to coalesce

The ex-governor ran better with more affluent and educated voters, as well as moderates and voters who described themselves as "somewhat" conservative. Thirty-five percent of primary voters said in exit polls that a candidate's ability to beat Obama was most important to them; Romney won 71 percent of those voters to Santorum's 17 percent. Similarly, 58 percent of primary voters said the economy was their top issue, and Romney bested Santorum among those voters by a 17-point margin.

GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney delivers remarks to his supporters following his win in the Illinois primary.

Santorum continued to outperform Romney among downscale and less educated voters, along with the most conservative Republicans and evangelical Christians.

'We don't need a manager'
He emphasized his ideological steadiness versus Romney in remarks on Tuesday evening, deriding Romney by implication as a timid manager of the status quo.

"This is an election about fundamental and foundational things," he said from Pennsylvania.?"This is not about who's the best person to manage Washington. We don't need a manager."

The difference in Tuesday's primary was that these voters made up a smaller share of the electorate than in states like Mississippi and Alabama -- the conservative hotbeds Santorum won last week.

First Read: Illinois isn't Alabama or Mississippi

Despite Romney's victory, the Republican race appeared poised to stretch on at least weeks longer. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has shown no willingness to leave the race, and Santorum's campaign has circulated its delegate math, which focuses on halting Romney's march to gather the 1,144 delegates needed to secure the nomination.

This would spark a contested convention when Republicans meet to formally make their nomination in August.

Presidential candidate Mitt Romney has focused almost exclusively on President Barack Obama in recent days instead of the other GOP candidates. NBC's Peter Alexander reports.

According to NBC News projections early Wednesday, Romney had won 485 delegates. Santorum had accrued 193 delegates, while Gingrich had won 137 and Paul had received 34.

The Santorum campaign made its case to reporters on Tuesday why 1,144 was still an attainable goal for the former senator, though he would have to perform especially well in future contests in order to best Romney.

For Santorum, the Illinois primary had?meant an opportunity to again upset Romney in a Midwestern nominating contest the frontrunner had been expected to win. Santorum battled the former Massachusetts governor closely in both Ohio and Michigan, but Romney's superior campaign organization and finances -- combined with millions in ads bought by a supportive super PAC -- ultimately carried the day.

Mitt Romney holds a town hall meeting at Gateway Convention Center in Collinsville, Ill., on March 17.

But Romney started to pivot toward his general election target -- President Obama -- in his victory remarks on Tuesday evening. He only referenced his Republican challengers so as to congratulate them on a hard-fought campaign. He used the rest of his speech to test themes of his argument against the president.

"This election will be about principle. Our economic freedom will be on the ballot," he said. "I'm running for president because I have the experience and vision to get us out of this mess."

Romney was able to carry momentum into Tuesday's contest resulting from a commanding victory in last Sunday's Puerto Rico primary, which not only won him 20 delegates, but also raised questions about the prudence of Santorum's decision to campaign in the territory -- an expensive commitment which won him no delegates, and only a small share of the popular vote.

Andrea Saul, press secretary for the Romney campaign, previews Tuesday's primary and talks about the delegate tally.

Organizational issues that had dogged Santorum in Ohio's primary also re-appeared in Illinois, where he failed to file the required delegate slates in four congressional districts, meaning he was ineligible to win 10 delegates.

The campaign turns next to Saturday's caucuses in Louisiana. Gingrich, who again vowed to fight onward to Republicans' convention in Tampa this August, spent the day in Louisiana. Santorum also heads next to Louisiana.

The next batch of contests are on April 3 in Wisconsin, Maryland and Washington, D.C.

Put down an asphalt sealer if you see any damages or cracks in your driveway. The elements can cause your driveway to crack if not protected. Sealants help prevent damage from elements by providing protective layers and ensuring an extended life.

Safety precautions are the first consideration when planning a home renovation. These precautions are necessary to ensure that your home and you can be safe from injury. You should have a thorough understanding of the power tools you will be using before you start a renovation project.

Design your home so that water flows away from it during storms. Damage to the foundation can be costly. Ways in which you can accomplish this include lengthening your downspout, grading your yard, or installing a retention wall if the slope in your yard is extreme.

Make sure the contractor is attentive to you. You want a knowledgeable contractor, but you also want a respectful one. If the contractor doesn?t listen to you, he might accidentally do something you don?t want. Make sure that the contractor listens to everything you have to say.

An easy, inexpensive way to keep your house (and your feet) toasty warm is to add a heat source beneath your tiled floors. If you are already planning to install tile floors, talk to a flooring person about using radiant heat. You will be glad that you went the extra mile ? this form of heating is not only efficient; it feels absolutely wonderful! It is also a feature that will highly appeal to potential buyers if you decide to sell your home in the future.

Create a visually pleasing bookcase with the use of some wallpaper. Pick a unique and interesting design. Only put the wallpaper on the back of the bookcase; you will see the wallpaper behind the books. This will improve the appearance of the bookcase and add a unique focal point to whatever room it is in.

An easy way to improve your home is by getting a new mailbox. A newly replaced mailbox is a nice looking addition that gives your home instant curb appeal. Just be sure when you?re doing the installation that it conforms to all city codes. This job is can be completed within a couple hours.

Identify low points on your property, particularly around your foundation. If any low areas are found, they should be filled in order to prevent pooling of water and further downward erosion. Water that erodes away the soil surrounding the foundation can get into the house or cause rotting.

Why not start a landscaping project to beautify the surroundings of your home? When planning a landscaping project consider using a variety of textures in your design. Adding proper landscape to your yard greatly increases first impressions and goes a long way in increasing the value of your home.

A ground-level air conditioning unit is often absolutely necessary, but that doesn?t make it pretty to look at. You can safely and effectively camouflage with a wooden trellis or latticework. You can also use an ornamental grass, like pampas grass, if you about an empty foot of space in between the unit?s edge and the roots.

You can decrease energy costs and still have a well-lit exterior by switching out your always-on lighting system for one that is motion-activated. There are options as far as sensitivity and turning on the light manually if those options are important to you.

You can quickly block off a mouse hole in your house using some steel wool. Mice can?t chew through steel wool, so the vermin will no longer be able to enter your house.

Take the information laid out here and complete the home improvement projects that will help improve your home. Doing even a minor home improvement on your own can both make life easier and provide personal satisfaction. Use the information in this article to help you with your project and then enjoy the results!

Syrian rebels outgunned, struggling for supplies

GORENTAS, Turkey (AP) ? Syrian rebel commander Ahmad Mihbzt and his ragtag fighters grabbed their aging rifles to fight Syrian troops advancing on their village, but soon fled under a rain of exploding artillery shells.

"We will fight until our last drop of blood," Mihbzt declared a week later in this village across the Turkish border. "We just withdrew because we ran out of ammunition."

Like Mihbzt's men, rebels across Syria fighting to topple President Bashar Assad lack the weapons that can pose a serious challenge to the regime's large, professional army. Some rebel units have more fighters than guns, forcing them to take turns fighting. Because of ammunition shortages, some fire automatic rifles one shot at a time, counting each bullet.

Rebel leaders and anti-regime activists say rising gun prices and more tightly controlled borders are making it harder for them to acquire arms and smuggle them into Syria. This could tip the already unbalanced military equation of Syria's year-old uprising further in the regime's favor.

The opposition has suffered a series of military setbacks as regime forces have repeatedly routed them in their strongholds, most recently the eastern city of Deir al-Zour on Tuesday.

The weapons shortage has grown so acute that the opposition's disorganized leadership say only military aid can stop Assad's forces. Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Libya have spoken positively of the idea, but no country is known to be arming the rebels. The United States and many European countries have rejected sending weapons, fearing that it would fuel a civil war.

The weapons problems reflect the fractured, haphazard nature of the rebel movement. The uprising began a year ago with peaceful protests demanding political reform, inspired by the successful revolts in Tunisia and Egypt. Since then, Assad has waged a withering crackdown.

In response, some in the opposition began to take up arms to defend their towns and attack government troops. The local militias and breakaway units from the Syrian army mostly identify with the Free Syrian Army, a loose-knit umbrella group, but they operate independent of each other. The groups, numbering anywhere from a few dozen to a few hundred men, are largely on their own in finding weapons and supplies.

Defectors from the army, mostly low-level soldiers, bring arms and know-how with them. Most have only light weapons, such as Kalashnikov assault rifles and rocket-propelled grenades. Rebel coordinators say groups have looted heavier weapons from army caches, and activist videos posted online show anti-aircraft guns and anti-tank missiles. But heavy weapons remain rare and have not significantly boosted rebel capabilities.

Smuggling from neighboring countries was key earlier in the conflict. But rebels and anti-regime activists now say Syrian forces have mined many of the smuggling routes from Turkey and Lebanon, and the Turkish and Jordanian governments have tightened border controls to avoid being pulled into the conflict.

Rebel frustrations are clear in the string of poor Turkish villages across Syria's northern border where more than 16,000 Syrians live in refugee camps. The camps host hundreds of rebel fighters seeking to regroup as well as smugglers who trade in livestock, cigarettes and gasoline.

Last week, some 200 rebels with light arms in the Syrian hill village of Janoudiyeh were no match for Assad's forces, which shelled the area before sending in troops, said Mihbzt, the rebel commander.

His forces fled across the border, about 6 miles from town, and into Turkey. But rising gun prices and strict border controls prevent his men from rearming, he said. So they plan to target border sentries to seize their arms or loot Syrian arms depots.

Other fighters who have found refuge in Turkey reported similar frustrations.

"We were forced to fire single shots in clashes because we don't have enough ammunition," said Majdi Hamdo. "I have two magazines for my Kalashnikov and one of them has been empty for the past month."

In contrast, analysts say Assad's army boasts 330,000 soldiers and highly advanced weaponry, most of it bought from Russia.

While many of its recent weapons purchases ? like air defense technology and anti-ship missiles ? can't be used against rebels, they point to a highly sophisticated force.

Joseph Holliday, an analyst with the Washington-based Institute for the Study of War who has studied Syria's rebels, said they will not be able to challenge the army without substantial help, though they can wage an effective insurgency.

"There is no possibility in the foreseeable future that they'll be able to pose a real challenge to or defeat the regime's forces in a pitched battle," he said. "They can continue to survive. They can attack areas where the regime is not in full control, and they can sap regime forces and get them to play the proverbial whack-a-mole that U.S. forces had to deal with in Iraq."

That means the violence could last. Already the revolt has become one of the bloodiest of the Arab Spring, with the U.N. saying more than 8,000 people have been killed.

"Because of the strength of the regime and because of the rebels' survivability and resilience, you're looking at a protracted conflict," he said.

Rebels in Syria's south typify this insurgent strategy, where small bands of fighters attack regime targets then disappear into nearby farmland. This week, they bombed a bridge on a key highway to prevent the army from bringing in more tanks.

Activist Raed al-Suleiman said his village of Nawa in Daraa province has fewer than 100 rebels, whom local residents support.

"They give them money, food or clothing," he said. "Their ammunition is all booty from the regime since no aid is coming from Jordan."

Ahmad Kassem, an FSA coordinator outside Syria, said rebels had recently looted weapons caches in Daraa and outside of Damascus, getting thousands of machine guns, rocket-propelled grenades, anti-aircraft guns and missiles.

"The seized weapons will give a qualitative jump to our military operations," he said. "It's not enough, but sufficient in the meantime to inflict harm on Bashar's oppressive army."

The Syrian government blames the uprising terrorist groups acting out a foreign conspiracy and cites insurgent attacks to press its argument. It has vowed to keep fighting.

It bars most media organizations for working in the country, and rebel and activists claims could not be independently confirmed.

Still, many rebels say the arms shortage restricts their abilities.

Rebel coordinator Mohammed Qaddah in Jordan said some 2,000 fighters in the countryside around Damascus have less than one rifle per man, forcing them to take turns or resort to simpler means.

"We use Molotov cocktails and homemade grenades in roadside ambushes because we're desperate," he said. "But we have no means to arm all our eager men."

Revenue Potential of Business to Business Advertising | ArticleBro ...

http://retailbizmd.com/wp- content/themes/k_i_s/images/logo.png
With fears of recession having now being laid to rest, business establishments have once again begun to spend on marketing their products and services to other business establishments i.e., business to business advertising is slowly looking up again. In fact, according to the latest Forrester report, manufacturers plan to spend 6.7% more on business to business advertising in 2011 than they did in the preceding year. Increasing business to business advertising spends is a vital indicator of business growth and potential.

The same Forrester report also mentions that in 2011 business to business advertising is aimed more at lead generation, product marketing, product management, and product branding. Manufacturers and service providers seem to have realized that in order to position themselves with potential corporate and institutional buyers they must position themselves in new interactive spaces as well.

A study conducted by Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) indicated that roughly 69% of the business to business advertising will be through increased use of digital video advertising (DVA) because the manufacturers and service providers felt that business to business advertising via digital video advertising was more traceable and easier to target. Also, with new technologies available, digital video advertising was less expensive and hence more cost efficient.

The Forrester report further pointed out that tech service sector would increase their business advertising solutions by as much as 17% while Business and professional services would increase their business to business advertising spend by 4.3% and Finance and Insurance by 5.9% and manufacturers would increase their business to business advertising by 4.3%. The new statistics on business to business advertising is hardly surprising when considering that the tech industry was least affected by the recent recession. But increased ad spends by the other industries indicates a robust business recovery.

In all this we should not fail to notice that the Forrester report pointed out that a significant portion of the business to business advertising would be
spent on product branding and despite being a young platform, as much as 7.4% of the business to business advertising money would be spent on community and social marketing. All in all, business to business advertising will definitely see a significant revival in 2011. Check out for SEO service providers in USA.

Small business establishments will continue to focus their business to business advertising using traditional media whereas the larger manufacturers and service providers are keen to try out non-traditional media including social networking and the internet. This too is along expected lines because small businesses have lesser margin for error and trying out new avenues of marketing and are therefore bound to stick to tried and tested methods of business to business advertising. Large manufacturers and service providers on the other hand have larger budgets and therefore enjoy a wider playing field. Large manufacturers and service providers can afford to allocate their business to business advertising budgets to traditional as well as non-traditional methods. In fact, if it weren?t for the large manufacturers and service providers, non traditional methods of business to business advertising might never have taken off.

Use Decorative Techniques to Inject Character into Your Bathroom ...

use decorative techniques to inject character into your bathroom copy Use Decorative Techniques to Inject Character into Your Bathroom For quite a few years, the interior design trend has been to decorate and style your bathroom as though it is a hotel bathroom. This means that the bathroom has a very modest and plain feel to it, similar to what you would see in any hotel bathroom across the world. Although this minimalist look has its appeal with its crisp white bathroom cabinets and clean cut design, the new bathroom trend is to inject a little character into the room. The bathroom is one of the favourite rooms in any home after all, and you can easily bring personality to the bathroom by utilising a few decorative techniques.

If you had previously spent a lot of time decorating your minimal styled bathroom you will be happy to hear that you don?t have to redo it completely to make way for this new design trend. Bringing personality to any bathroom is as simple as adding bright or patterned feature items that will act as focal points in the room. This could be by decorating the main wall in an eye-catching paint or adding colourful bathroom accessories such as soap dispensers or towels.

However, it is important to remember that any decorating change you make should reflect your own personal taste. As the bathroom is the most-used room of any home, there is no point going for garish printed wallpaper simply because it is colourful as if you don?t like the way you have actually decorated the room you will find yourself redecorating yet again a few months later.

You can also add character to the room by investing in decorative bathroom furniture available from Better Bathrooms. Bathroom cabinets or shelves can easily house statement accessories such as ornate jars or coloured accessories that will add extra character to the room.

An easy way to put that personal stamp on a guest bathroom is to add photos or framed artwork. This way when guests visit your house, they will really get an idea of your own individual sense of style and design.
